Activities

Swimming

Our new state-of-the-art pool (built spring 2003) allows training in swimming from beginning through advanced levels, as well as lifesaving, competitions, and free-time open swimming. Our swim staff counselors are all experienced and certified lifeguards and many are certified Water Safety Instructors.

Waterskiing

Jack May, a world-class competitor and judge in his native England, brought waterskiing to FPC forty years ago. Our clean, spring-fed private lake is busy all summer long, as this is one of our most popular programs.

Sewing

Our most unique program (and most popular) is sewing. Campers can design their own projects or use templates with the help of our sewing staff. Many campers will even bring in their own fabrics from home.

Tennis

We have two lighted tennis courts and plenty of racquets for beginners. Tennis is offered at elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels.

Riflery

The riflery program follows NRA and ACA guidelines for safety and content. The children are taught that safety and proper cleaning and care are far more important than mere accuracy. This program is reserved for campers 10 and older and is equally popular with both sexes. In response to some parents’ concerns, we believe that such instruction makes a child safer and more responsible in today’s environment, by satisfying a child’s natural curiosity and teaching them safe and proper gun handling. Of course, no child is forced to take part in this or any other particular activity. BB guns are available for those children too young for Riflery.

Archery

Our enclosed ranges allow safe instruction and practice with a variety of distances and bow weights.

Soccer/Team Sports

Soccer, basketball, softball, and other team sports and events are taught on our ball field, courts, and in the Meadow. Soccer is especially popular, as we always have campers from all over the world. Even cricket is played from time to time!

Campcraft

Learning to be at home in the outdoors restores city-raised kids to the close-to-nature experiences that are their rightful heritage: the lore of the Western pioneers and the Native Americans.  Campers will enhance their resourcefulness and self-reliance, outdoor safety skills and the code of the true sportsman. The children learn outdoor cooking, path finding skills, and how to provide themselves with shelter and fire in the outdoors.

FPC Musical

A relatively new and wildly popular among the campers and staff. Campers star in the musical. Our singing/drama/dance instructors collaborate to direct the production. Campers audition, learn dance steps, songs and speaking lines in preparation to perform for the entire camp at the end of each session.

Fishing/Canoeing

Our private camp lake is home to blue gill, largemouth bass as big as 11 pounds, and channel catfish. The camp provides all of the poles, tackle, and instruction.

Tumbling/Gymnastics

Friendly Pines teaches basic floor exercises and tumbling, always with the emphasis on safety.

Photography & Journalism

Campers work with digital cameras and photo editing programs, while learning the practice of good photography. They work with partners to create stories. Both the photos and the stories make up the camp newspapers published each session.

Pet Care

This activity is for campers 9 years old and younger. It is a unique opportunity for children to care for and interact with kittens, goats, lambs, rabbits, chicken, ducks…and more!

Crafts and Jewelry

In our handcrafts activity campers have the chance to express themselves creatively through painting, ceramics, mosaic, tie-dye, and much more. The activity is for all ages and offers projects that will challenge all skill levels. Campers also have a chance to work with metals and beading in our popular jewelry making activity.

Rocketry and Model Building

Campers bring their own model kits. We provide the glue, paint, engines. If the weather permits, we launch rockets from the meadow at the end of the session.

Earth Lore

This activity helps campers enjoy and study the natural history of this beautiful part of the state. Short one-hour projects are offered each day that will stimulate curiosity and encourage learning.

Volleyball

We hire staff who can teach both the basics and more advanced volleyball techniques. We have a beach volleyball facility that is fun and safe.

Hiking

The Bradshaw Mountains provide miles of wonderful hiking. This two-hour activity allows campers of all ages to discover the wonders that lie beyond the camps boundaries. Some of the destinations have names like Ray Gardner Hill and Field of Dreams. Many campers sign up each session for the all day hike to the top of Spruce Mountain, from which the campers can view the vast Prescott National Forest from an elevation of 7700’.
