Bareback riding is more recreational compared with our other horse programs. Bareback is an activity of games on horseback, where we use bareback pads without stirrups. This allows the rider to feel more movements of the horse and develop balance and control, as well as a better seat. This activity does not have a clothing requirement or placements.

Learn the skills to become skilled in the outdoors including; building and cooking on real fires, chopping wood, building shelters, tying knots, setting up tents and many, many more.

Canoeing and Kayaking is one of our most popular activities that actually ventures off the Friendly Pines site to a beautiful lake just down the road. In order to take Canoeing and Kayaking you must take the swim test in our swimming pool which requires you to swim a couple of lengths and tread water for 1 minute unaided. In canoeing and Kayaking you will learn all the different strokes and techniques of paddling, and then there is plenty of time to take a voyage around Goldwater Lake and to explore all the little coves with your friends. Canoeing and Kayaking is a 2hr activity (2 activity periods long), which gives you the maximum time to explore the wonders of Goldwater Lake and get the most beneficial instruction from the counselors.

Challenge is for campers aged between 10 and 12 years old. It is a 2-hour activity (2 activity periods). The first part of the activity is a lot of fun games and initiatives that put your skills to the test to see how well you can work as a team. Then you will progress on to the low ropes and perform more tasks and challenges with your teammates. Once you have completed these you can move up in the world (literally!) and go onto the high ropes!! We have a huge variety of high ropes elements including the climbing wall, zip line, PITA Pass, crate stack and the Giant Swing!!! Push yourself to new boundaries and experience life in the trees!

Challenge X is the next progression up from Challenge. To take this activity you have to be 13 years old, or 12 years old ‘with previous challenge experience’. It covers all of the same activities as Challenge, (such as the games, initiatives, and team building tasks) however they are tailored towards the older and more experienced campers. Challenge X equally does all of the high elements (including the zip line and giant swing), but it also offers the opportunity to do the Pamper Pole, our 52ft leap of faith!! There is also an opportunity to take part in the Challenge Overnight with a glow-in-dark zip line (arguably one of the coolest things ever!)

The only requirement is a willingness to shake those hips and strut your stuff on the dance floor! Work with the counselor to learn routines and to create your own which you may get the chance to perform at the Friendly Pines camper talent show.

Do you love to act? Have you ever appeared on stage….or would you like to? Are you be the next Brad Pitt or Kristen Stewart? Or maybe you prefer the backstage directing and fine details of performing. Either way this activity could be for you. You will learn a variety of different acting and technical techniques. You may get to create your own skit with your friends and perform it for everybody the Friendly Pines camper talent show!

This activity gives you the opportunity to explore and learn about the wonders of the forest. You get the chance to learn about all the plants and animals that are in the forest. Spend an activity period exploring Toby’s Hole, the lake, and other areas of camp and try to catch a glimpse of some really cool things. We also offer science experiments and demonstrations. If you’re lucky you may even be able to glimpse a small snake or if you are quick enough, catch a lizard!

Our English riding program consists mostly of hunt seat style, sticking mainly to flat work with advanced riders progressing to ground poles and basic patterns. Our normal class size for English riding is ten or less. We offer from beginning to advanced riding, however, there are placements to determine level. If you believe you are more than a beginner please attend placements on arrival day.

Learn the basics of guitar. Classes are small enough that even an experienced player can get enough instruction to improve his or her skills. Learn how to play your at least one song on the guitar. Handcrafts is an activity for all campers. In this activity you will get to make a variety of different projects, ranging from picture frames to tie-dye! Our counselors have extensive experience with arts and crafts and numerous ideas for projects; however if you have your own ideas for projects and designs for the class then they would be more than willing to help you and your friends make your ideas a reality!!

Hiking is one of the few activities that get the privilege to venture off the Friendly Pines site. It is a 2hr activity (2 activity periods long) and all you need is a water bottle and the ability enough to hike up to 3 miles. You will have the chance to explore the surrounding forest outside of camp and get the opportunity to climb on rocks at the boulder pile or skim stones at Goldwater Lake. There is also an opportunity to sign up for a big hike up Spruce Mountain and marvel fantastic views from the lookout tower at the top!

Junior adventure is the challenge activity available to campers’ aged 9 and under. In this activity you play a lot of fun games and complete little challenges set to you by the counselors. These are a lot of fun, however, they are sometimes dwarfed by the extreme highlight of this activity….the zip line!!!! If you take this activity, not only do you play fun games, but you also get chance to go on the climbing wall and ride on our zip line!!

Junior Facilitators is for our oldest and most experienced Challenge campers. To take this activity you must be 13 or 14 years old ‘with previous challenge experience’. In this activity you will learn all the techniques behind the activities, just like the counselors! Learn how to belay each other, learn how to facilitate games, learn how to transfer yourself on the high ropes course! It is our most advanced and technical Challenge activity, and you will also get to work with Jr. adventure and put your new skills to the test. Facilitate games for them, belay them on the climbing wall and facilitate them through the zip line!! Everything facilitated by you under the watchful supervision of the counselors!!

Friendly Pines Camp has a long-standing tradition of mule driving, and has added to that miniature horses and Shetland ponies. Campers learn how to hitch and drive a small two-person cart. The campers also learn basic grooming and hoof care skills. We offer from beginner to advanced driving. Please attend placements on arrival day if you are more than a beginner.

Packing was taught at camp for years by its founder, and we continue to keep tradition alive. The campers learn horse handling, how to balance the load, and tie the double diamond hitch. Campers often enjoy a cookout at the end of the session. Packing does not require placements.

Do you love animals? Learn how to care for and look after a wide range of animals including ducks, chickens, kittens, goats, and rabbits. You will get to bottle feed a goat or calf. Feed them, clean them and simply enjoy the time spent with animals.

Do you like to take photographs? Do you like to write? Have you ever helped to produce a newspaper?!? Learn how to take a range of photographs from different angles, using different lighting techniques and effects. Learn how to interview and write reports, and visit all the different activities to interview campers and counselors. Create your own cartoons to be published in the Camp Newsletter that is given to each camper on departure day.

Ranch Hands is a ‘non-riding’ horse activity, but very hands on. In Ranch hands campers learn about numerous topics including but not limited to: grooming, breeds, colors, shoeing, styles of riding, and some basic equine first aid techniques. There are no placements, but boots are required.

Sewing is one of, if not our most popular activity here at camp! Join your friends and make a huge variety of items such as blankets, ugly dolls, angry birds, pajamas or anything else that you want. If you have material lying around at home that you think will look great as a new pillow, bring it with you to camp and you can use it to create your own personalized sewing project. This is a great skill to have, and Friendly Pines Camp is one of the few camps in America where you can develop it.

Free swim is an hour activity period where the campers have access to the pool for whatever they want (within the guidelines!). This is where campers can play games such as water basketball, play with noodles etc or just chill out at the poolside. We also have a “log” that you can try to roll just like the lumberjacks. Campers must pass the swim test on the first day of camp to be able to take this activity. We will provide instruction for non-swimmers.

We offer Tennis on elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. Once your skill level is determined, we will place you in the tennis activity where you will be able to develop and improve. If you’ve never played tennis before and would love to learn the basics, that’s wonderful. We have elementary classes that will start with the very basic skills.

Ultimate Frisbee, for those who don’t know, is a mixture between football and tossing a Frisbee. Whether you know how to throw a Frisbee or not, you will learn different throwing techniques and put them to the test in games and matches. You will even learn how to play Frisbee Golf on our lovely 9-hole course. The activity takes place on our grassy meadow.

Vaulting is basically gymnastics on horseback. We teach the campers the 6 basics starting on a barrel and then moving to the horse. Vaulting is done in a round arena with one horse on a lunge line, so the camper is able to practice techniques such as riding with no hands, shoulder stands, and pyramids. We offer from beginning to advanced riding, however, there are placements to determine level. If you believe you are more than a beginner please attend placements on arrival day.

Waterski is one of our most popular activities. It is a two-hour activity (2 activity periods long) so you will spend either the morning or the afternoon down on our own lake. Learn how to stand up on skis, see how many laps around the lake you can complete, and you even get chance to go tubing…se how long you can hold on for!! We also have knee boards.

Our Western program is one of the most popular activities at camp. In western we do arena work as well as go out on many trail rides. Friendly Pines Camp backs up to the Prescott National Forest and we have hundreds of acres of trails. With upper level riders we will sometimes do an overnight ride, lunch rides, or dinner rides. Our typical class size for western is 12 or less. We offer from beginning to advanced riding, however, there are placements to determine level.
